What Parents Ask Us

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers — from trip types, family participation, payments, communication abroad, and safety logistics.

Trip Types & Participation

What is the difference between a “Family Trip” and a “Student Trip”?

Student Trips are built around enrolled LCA students serving and learning alongside their peers, with Journey team leading the experience.

Family Trips invite parents and siblings to serve and learn together with their student. The heart of Journey is always student growth, and we have seen families who serve side by side carry that impact for years. Check each trip listing to see which experiences welcome family participation.

How many people can I bring from my family for a “Family Trip”?

At least one participant must be a currently enrolled LCA student who meets the age requirements for that trip.

As a standard, Family Trips allow a maximum of five family members, including the student. A few destinations may differ, so always confirm the details on the specific trip page.

If I pay for my own trip, may I attend with my student?

Parents and family members may join only on trips designated as Family Trips, even when covering their own costs. Student Trips remain student-focused experiences led by Journey team.

Payments & Logistics

What happens if I cannot pay the full amount for my trip?

Every trip includes a non-refundable deposit and a clear payment schedule.

If payments are not completed by the deadline, your family will not be able to attend. Refunds are not available after that point, including costs tied to flights and other booked travel. Review the individual trip details for the exact timeline that applies to your destination.

Is every Journey Trip tax deductible?

Yes. All Journey Trips are tax deductible. For questions about how that applies to your family’s situation, please consult your tax advisor.

What happens if my student or family needs to leave the trip early due to an unscheduled emergency?

If an unexpected emergency requires an early departure, any cost to change travel arrangements is the family’s responsibility. Participation days that are missed are not refunded.

LCA staff will walk with you through the next steps and help make arrangements so your family can get home safely.

Communication & Safety

How will I communicate with my child when they are out of the country?

Direct cell phone contact is usually limited while students are abroad. That can be due to service availability, a desire to keep students present and focused, and ministry partner guidelines.

You will receive contact information for the trip leader. Many trips also post daily updates for parents through Managed Missions. An LCA domestic contact remains available if you need to reach someone at home while the group is away.

Who can participate in Journey?

Journey is designed for currently enrolled LCA students. Age and grade requirements vary by destination, so eligibility depends on the specific trip.

Some experiences also welcome family participation. Trip flyers and the Journey team can confirm who is eligible for each opportunity.

How is Journey different from Educational Trips?

Educational Trips are grade-level experiences included in tuition, such as Texas History, Washington D.C., and Camp SOTO.

Journey is a separate service and mission program. Its optional domestic and international trips focus on leadership development and faith-centered service alongside peers and ministry partners.
